Burke House - Mission

Burke House is a charitable organization, founded by a Vietnam Veteran, dedicated to helping young 'street kids' in Vietnam. There are many children in Saigon, some as young as 5 years of age, who work to support their families. Some of these kids go to school part time and work the rest of the day. Others work all day and do not go to school at all. The kids, mostly girls, often work as street vendors, selling postcards, books, trinkets, flowers, and other souvenirs, usually to foreign tourists.

Burke House is a small organization of family and friends working together to do some good. We believe that every child in the world deserves an opportunity to develop his or her talent to the fullest. We believe that education is central to preparing oneself for a fulfilling life in a modern economy.

To that end we have developed several programs that attempt to assist these young Vietnamese 'street kids' attain a level of education that permits them to get off the street and enter the legitimate work force. These programs include tutoring, mentoring, some modest financial assistance, and even an occasional trip to the Zoo, the Water Park, or the Ice Cream Parlor.
